The Bet
Your birthday dinner. Saturday Nov 7, 6 to 10pm. Eight people, one sushi chef, and a sealed book that doesn't open until you turn 30.
The short version
- Dinner: private 18-course omakase, with the chef working from your slate island.
- Fun: a mentalist works the room as people arrive, then everyone tells a story about a bet they made. Last person to go has to sing theirs.
- The meaningful part: everyone writes real bets on the next year of your lives. The book gets locked until your 30th.
- The ending: out by 10, then walk to a listening bar on College.
- Cost: about $4,800 to $6,300 CAD. Nothing is booked or sent by me.
Airbnb is fine with it
You said they're OK with everything, so that risk is gone. The chef's deposit is non-refundable, since you're inside their 7-day window, so lock your guest count first.
Why this isn't corny
You're turning 29, the last birthday of your twenties, and your Oct 26 note says you want the best 30th next year. So the night has one thread: what are we each betting on? There are no question cards and nothing to win. Close friends tell true stories and commit to specific predictions in writing, in front of each other. If singing isn't your crowd, drop that rule and keep the stories.
The night
What makes a bet count
It has to be checkable next November. "You'll be happier" fails. "Hafu no longer lives in Toronto" works. So does a friend's name plus "has quit that job."
The room
The island only seats 4, so eight people can't sit at it. Turn it into the head of the table instead: move the dining table from the far brick wall and butt it against the stool side. The chef works in view of all eight at the head of the table, guests face each other, and the server carries each piece down.
- It looks like 6 to 8 seats in the photos. Measure the table and the gap from the island to the brick. Leave a walking route to the stairs and half bath, which may rule out a long rental. Toronto Event Rentals lists a 10 ft table for 8 to 10 at $400.
- Photograph the room before moving anything, then put it all back Sunday.
- Friends reach the deck through your bedroom, up steep stairs. Clear the room, and carry no full glasses up there. Coats go on the lower-level bed.
- Two or three people on the deck at a time. Voices carry in a laneway.
- No filming for the channel. The listing bans commercial photography and filming, and this night is better without it anyway.
- Nobody parks in front of the building, and that includes the chef team and the performer, who also carry gear up the stairs from the laneway. Tell friends to Uber or walk. The Leafs play the Canadiens at 7 that night, so downtown traffic will be slow.
The chef
Omakase wins here because one piece at a time gives the toasts their rhythm. Call the first two Monday morning and take whichever names the chef who'll actually cook.
18 courses from $239 a person: lobster sashimi, then 10 pieces including bluefin, A5 wagyu and uni. A chef, a server, tableware and setup are included, and they take bookings 48 hours out. Weak spot: I found no named restaurant background for founder Ted Jang, and only reviews on their own site. 647-231-2992, info@privatablex.com, site.
Ask: who is cooking and where did they train? How many staff, and what time do they arrive? Does their listed 2 hours for 18 courses hold with 8 guests and toasts (if not, take the 14-course at $179, listed at 1 hr 15)? Does the island layout work for 8? What's the total with the extra chef fee (it applies at 7+) and travel? Can the crew be out right after 10? How much fridge and counter space do they need? They need allergies at booking. Their pages disagree on guest-count changes (72 hours on one, 7 days on another), so treat Monday's number as final.
The most unusual choice: a kaiseki meal for up to 8 at $239 a person, about $1,912. Their 17-course sushi is $149 a person, about $1,192. The newest proof of activity I found is from Jan 2025, so confirm they're still running. Menu.
Chef Eyal Liebman and sommelier Rebecca Meir. 5 courses at $185 plus wine at $90, about $2,200 for 8, cooked from raw ingredients with the sommelier pouring. Their dinner runs 3 to 5 hours, so you'd cut the mentalist and a 10pm finish gets tight. 647-284-5530, site.
Modern Indian chef's table at home, with time at Trèsind in Dubai on his résumé. Butter chicken gnocchi, seared scallops in coconut moilee. No published price. Site.
Skipped: Raw + Ready (recommends 14 days' notice), Hibachi Connect (outdoor only, and flying shrimp), CHEFIN ($540 a person, about $4,320 for 8, chef unnamed). I found no in-home Peking duck, Korean or live-fire chef worth naming.
The other details
- Performer: Roman Royss, 437-432-4303, no listed price. Ask for a sealed prediction as his opener. Backup: magician James Alan, 416-995-1736, $650 an hour, whose custom material needs 2 months, so ask only about his existing set.
- Flowers: one low ikebana piece, no scent, kept below eye line. Aya Sugino first, Kioku second. Neither has confirmed short notice.
- Drinks: 2 champagne, 4 sake, and something good with no alcohol. Ask the chef what to pair. Izumi in the Distillery brews sake locally, open Saturday 12 to 8. Don't charge anyone for anything: AGCO says free drinks for invited guests in a private place need no permit. Its wording doesn't cover Airbnbs, and I couldn't confirm that part.
- Bar: call The Little Jerry about 8 people at 10pm. Its site only mentions reservations for dinner, so it may be walk-in. Backup: Mrs. Robinson, 574 College, live soul bands.
- Swaps: if your friends would hate mentalism, Imaginary Expedition (two voices and classical guitar, unamplified) has played for 8. If you want one strange extra, Sabrina Scott reads tarot with a "no bullshit approach," usually a 2-hour minimum plus travel.
- Rejected: tintype portraits (3 to 4 hours for 8 people, with darkroom chemicals in someone else's home), an instant-photo corner (one more scheduled beat), in-home tattoos (permanent, messy in someone else's home, and the rules for a rental are unclear), kintsugi (nobody I found comes to a home).
